Margaret Lilian Wadds was born at Bayside, New York. She graduated from Flushing High School in 1927 and enrolled at Barnard. Her career at Barnard continued her study of the Spanish language and culture. She was named to Phi Beta Kappa in 1931, the year she graduated. That year she was granted the Spanish Fellowship from the Department of Romance Languages and Literature and undertook a year of post-graduate work at the University of Madrid.
